Klarna Checkout and Payments in Frntkey

Klarna Checkout takes over the buyer flow end to end. Klarna Payments plugs individual methods into a merchant-built checkout. Both ship pre-wired in Frntkey for Norce and Shopware.

Klarna is the default payments provider for Nordic ecommerce. Frntkey ships both Klarna Checkout (KCO) and Klarna Payments pre-wired in the base product. Merchants activate the mode they need, provide their own Klarna merchant account, and Klarna is live at launch without a separate integration project.

  • Klarna Checkout pre-wired
  • Klarna Payments per-method support
  • Multi-market Nordic + DACH
  • Live at launch, no integration phase

Benefits

Ships in the baseline

Klarna Checkout and Klarna Payments are both part of the Frntkey base product. The mount points, redirect flows, and order sync are already in place. Activation is configuration, not integration.

KCO or Payments — your call

Merchants choose KCO for the fastest converting Nordic checkout, or Klarna Payments for a merchant-built checkout with Klarna methods alongside others. Frntkey supports either mode without changing the storefront architecture.

Works with Norce and Shopware

Klarna talks to Norce through Norce Checkout, and to Shopware via its payment plugin architecture. Frntkey handles the storefront-side integration on top of either backend.

Multi-market from day one

The base configuration supports Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Germany with market-specific method sets. Merchants activate what applies to their target markets during project setup.

What Klarna is

Klarna is the Swedish payments provider that dominates Nordic ecommerce checkout. It offers two distinct products for merchants: Klarna Checkout (KCO), a full-page checkout takeover that manages the entire buy flow, and Klarna Payments, a set of individual payment methods (Pay Now, Pay Later, Pay in 3, Financing) that plug into a merchant-built checkout.

Both are widely used across Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Germany. KCO is the shorter path for merchants who want Klarna to own the buyer experience end-to-end. Klarna Payments is the more flexible path for merchants who want to control their own checkout UX and use Klarna's methods within it.

Where Frntkey fits

Frntkey ships both Klarna Checkout and Klarna Payments pre-wired. The integration is part of the base product, not a project add-on. When a merchant activates Klarna, the storefront already has the mount points, the redirect flows, and the order confirmation logic in place. Configuration is per-project: merchant account credentials, market-specific method selection, and any custom fields the merchant needs to pass to Klarna.

On the backend side, Klarna talks to Norce through Norce Checkout for merchants using that combination, and to Shopware via Shopware's payment plugin architecture. Frntkey sits above both, rendering the storefront checkout that hosts the Klarna experience.

Klarna Checkout vs Klarna Payments

Klarna Checkout takes over the entire checkout page. The shopper stays on the merchant's domain, but Klarna's iframe handles address, payment method selection, and confirmation. The merchant's frontend is responsible for the pre-checkout cart page and the post-checkout order confirmation, but everything in between is Klarna.

Klarna Payments is more granular. The merchant builds the checkout page itself, then embeds Klarna payment methods (Pay Now card, Pay Later invoice, Slice It financing, Direct Debit) as options alongside other providers like Walley or Vipps. The merchant owns the buyer experience; Klarna is a payment layer.

Most Frntkey merchants on Norce use Klarna Checkout because it is the fastest path to a compliant, converting checkout. Merchants who want a custom-branded checkout or who need Klarna methods alongside non-Klarna alternatives use Klarna Payments instead.

What ships pre-wired

  • Klarna Checkout iframe integration on the storefront checkout page
  • Klarna Payments method selectors, ready to enable per market
  • Redirect and callback handling for order confirmation
  • Order sync back to Norce or Shopware after Klarna authorization
  • Test-mode configuration for pre-launch verification
  • Multi-market support (SE, NO, DK, FI, DE) with market-specific method sets

Nordic market context

Klarna is table stakes for a Nordic ecommerce storefront. Not offering Klarna in Sweden or Norway is a measurable conversion drop, particularly for D2C merchants selling to consumers. In Germany, Klarna is one of several strong options alongside SEPA direct debit and PayPal. In markets outside Klarna's core footprint, its role is smaller and merchants typically pair it with local providers.

Frntkey supports Klarna in all its supported markets by default. The base configuration includes the standard Nordic method set (Pay Now, Pay Later, Pay in 3, Financing) and merchants activate what applies to their target markets.

Setup timeline

On a Frntkey project, activating Klarna is a matter of configuration rather than integration. The merchant provides Klarna merchant account credentials for each market. Test mode gets verified against a real Klarna test environment. Production activation happens as part of the go-live checklist alongside payment reconciliation and order routing.

The merchant still needs their own Klarna merchant account and their own contract with Klarna. Frntkey and Nordic Web Team do not act as a Klarna reseller. The integration work is what Frntkey covers; the payment provider relationship is direct between the merchant and Klarna.

When Klarna is the right choice

Klarna is the default recommendation for Frntkey merchants selling to consumers in the Nordics or DACH. It converts well, buyers recognize it, and the KCO integration removes most of the checkout complexity from the project scope. For B2B merchants, Klarna's invoice methods work but Walley's B2B credit terms tend to fit larger orders better. Many Frntkey B2B storefronts run Klarna and Walley side by side, each surfacing to the buyer segments it fits.
